Lion Rock, Piha
Lion Rock separates North and South Piha and at high tide turns into an island. For centuries it was a pa (fortified village) of the local Te Kawerau a Maki tribe. The island is now in public ownership and a short five minute walk up its steep face will reward you with stunning views up both sides of the beach and across to the native bush of the Waitakere Ranges.
